What is Hajj and How to Perform It: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, a sacred pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather to perform this spiritual journey — an act of devotion, unity, and submission to Allah (SWT).

If you’ve ever wondered what Hajj is, why it is performed, or how to perform it correctly, this guide will take you through every step in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

What is Hajj?

The word Hajj literally means “to set out for a place.” In Islam, it refers to the pilgrimage to Makkah that every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able must perform at least once in their lifetime.

Hajj is performed during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, and it consists of a series of rituals that commemorate the actions of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), Hajar (Hagar), and Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) — peace be upon them.

The purpose of Hajj is not only physical travel but also spiritual purification — a chance to seek forgiveness, renew faith, and strengthen one’s connection with Allah.

The Importance of Hajj in Islam

  • It is the fifth pillar of Islam.

  • It represents unity, as Muslims from every race and country stand equal before Allah.

  • It symbolizes sacrifice, patience, and humility.

  • It offers a chance for complete forgiveness of sins — as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or wrongdoing, he returns as pure as the day his mother gave birth to him.”
    (Sahih al-Bukhari)

How to Perform Hajj – Step-by-Step Guide

Hajj includes several days of rituals performed in and around Makkah. Here’s a breakdown of the steps:

1. Entering the State of Ihram

Before crossing the Miqat (boundary points around Makkah), pilgrims must enter the sacred state known as Ihram.

  • Men wear two white unstitched sheets.

  • Women wear modest clothing that covers the body (no specific color required).

  • Make Niyyah (intention) for Hajj and recite the Talbiyah:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk…”

2. Arrival in Makkah – Tawaf al-Qudum

Upon entering Makkah, pilgrims perform Tawaf al-Qudum (Arrival Tawaf) — circling the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise while reciting prayers and supplications.

After Tawaf, perform two rak’ahs of prayer near Maqam Ibrahim if possible, and then drink Zamzam water.

3. Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

Next, perform Sa’i, which means walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, remembering Hajar’s search for water for her son Ismail.

This act symbolizes trust in Allah and perseverance.

4. Journey to Mina (8th Dhul Hijjah)

On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims travel to Mina, a valley near Makkah. They spend the day and night in prayer, reflection, and reciting the Talbiyah.

5. The Day of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah)

This is the most important day of Hajj. Pilgrims travel to Mount Arafat and spend the afternoon in supplication, dua, and repentance.

Standing at Arafat (Wuquf) is the essence of Hajj — without it, the Hajj is incomplete.

After sunset, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah, where they:

  • Pray Maghrib and Isha together.

  • Collect small pebbles for the next ritual.

6. Stoning at Jamarat (10th Dhul Hijjah)

At Mina, pilgrims throw seven pebbles at the largest pillar (Jamrat al-Aqabah) to symbolize rejecting Satan.

After stoning:

  • Sacrifice an animal (Qurbani) — symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah.

  • Men shave their heads (Halq) or shorten their hair; women cut a small portion.

  • Exit the state of Ihram partially.

7. Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i

Return to Makkah and perform Tawaf al-Ifadah, another seven rounds around the Kaaba, followed by Sa’i if not done earlier.

This is a key ritual signifying purity and renewal after sacrifice.

8. Days of Tashreeq (11th–13th Dhul Hijjah)

Pilgrims remain in Mina for two or three more days, performing stoning at all three Jamarat pillars each day — reaffirming their rejection of evil and commitment to faith.

9. Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)

Before leaving Makkah, pilgrims perform the Farewell Tawaf, making seven final circuits around the Kaaba — a spiritual goodbye to the House of Allah.

Conclusion

Hajj is more than a physical journey — it’s a life-changing spiritual experience that renews the heart and strengthens the bond with Allah. Every step, from wearing Ihram to the final Tawaf, teaches humility, patience, and unity.

For every Muslim, performing Hajj is a moment of deep reflection, forgiveness, and gratitude — a reminder that we are all travelers heading back to our Creator.
